Clearwater Termites Swarm Again

It’s that time again. The time when termites begin their flight to find a mate in an attempt to start a new colony, sometimes in our homes. As the weather begins to warm and also when the rains begin, termites begin this mating ritual as Clearwater Termites Swarm Again.

Why Do Termites Swarm

Termites swarm with the hope to spread their nests to other locations. Many are not strong fliers. Consequently, they rely on wind currents to assist with their mating flights.

After the termite nuptial flight, they shed their wings. These wormy looking termites crawl into voids and cracks with hopes to locate the perfect nesting site. There, the termite will begin excavating a new nest and deposit their eggs not long after.

Termite Swarming will occur at different times of day. Depending on the type of termite some will take flight during the day while others will fly after the sun goes down. The Eastern Subterranean Termite swarms during the day generally between October through February.  Drywood Termites, depending on the species will swarm day or night typically April through May. However, there are some species that swarm the entire year. Even the Formosan Termite like a night flight during late spring.  No matter when the termites fly, they are an indication of a nest in close proximity.

Now, ants will swarm as well. They can easily be mistaken for termites. The four wings on the Ant wings are generally shorter that than the body and will have 2 different sizes. While termites have four wings that are not only the same length but also extend past the body. Another difference is the ant has an antenna that is elbowed. The termite has straight antennae.

Now, you may not see signs of a termite infestation beside seeing the swarmer of the termite with their shed wings. If you see one or more, or their dropped wings, get help with your Clearwater Termites.
