Common New Port Richey Pests   arrow

Florida really is a beautiful state. Sure, it’s a bit crowded, and sure it’s a bit hot. But some of that honestly just adds to the charm. But just like everything in life, you have to take the good with the bad. And the bad with Florida? Well, nothing’s worse than bugs. Thanks to our warm, sunny weather and our swampy, forest covered state we live in a hotbed of insects. This includes everything from our local bugs, to invasive species that have made their way into our homes from other countries through our ports. But when it comes to pests, being knowledgeable about them is half of the battle in keeping them away from you and out of your home. That’s why today, we’ll be discussing a few common New Port Richey pest insects you may run into.

The Cockroach, A.K.A. the Palmetto Bug

The palmetto bug is actually the common American Cockroach. But just like everything, we Floridians had to put a little twist on it and make it our own. Unfortunately, this bug isn’t something we’re too proud of. They’re dark brown, and easily identifiable by their sheer size alone. But they also have two small, yellow circles near their head and have long legs that are covered with intimidating looking spikes.

Their most striking feature is on their back, though. And that’s their wings. They have two long wings that are larger than their body, but they still aren’t very strong fliers. That’s why these bugs are so scary. When they’re up in the air, they can’t really control where they’re going to end up. This is why they so often collide with humans when they take flight.

The Bed Bug

This is probably my least favorite of the Common New Port Richey Pests. Bed bugs are the vampires of the insect world. These small, apple-seed sized parasites live in mattresses, box springs, frames, and even electrical outlets. They come out at night to bite you and your pets and feast on your blood. Finding them is honestly a bit easier than a lot of pests since the biggest telltale sign of them in your home is blood on your sheets. They’re small and clear at first, but once they’ve gorged themselves on your flesh, they grow much larger and are a dark red from all of your blood they have inside of them.

The Mosquito

The most common and most dangerous of our pests down in the south are the mosquitos. And not just any mosquito, but EVERY mosquito. Thanks to our busy ports, we have dozens of invasive species that rub elbows with us every day, and that’s why it’s important to properly cover yourself whenever you go outside. Not only do they itch, but each bite from each different species carries its own unique threat.

If you find yourself with an infestation of any of these insects, just know that each one carries it’s own distinct risks to your health and your home. And not only that, but there’s not much a layman can do about them. Make sure to contact a professional to get these problems dealt with quickly and the right way and be rid of these Common New Port Richey Pests.
