Exclusions

Bed Bugs love to enter our home in several ways.  From Hotel Stays, concert halls, libraries, movie theaters, buses, trains, restaurants and so much more. These blood-sucking critters will hitch a ride with attempts to get into our home. Keep in mind, just because they are called bed bugs does not mean that is the only place they nest. These bugs will nest anywhere humans spend a large part of their day. These areas include couches, cars, and even office chairs. While it’s nearly impossible to know when they have hitchhiked, there are some things you can do to exclude them from your home.

First and foremost, no clutter under the bed. Bed bugs love to nest in clutter. Caulk any holes near seated areas and beds in your home. Now, cannot stress this enough, get bed bug covers for both the mattresses and the box springs. Do this for all beds in the house, even the ones not being used. Stay away from cheap bed bug mattress covers because they tear and lack a place to tuck the zipper away. Without being able to tuck the zipper, bed bugs will travel in and out of the covers.

Sanitation

As stated above, do not store items under the bed. Leaving these items allow bed bugs to find an easy place to nest undetected.  Also, keep the house, closets, nightstands, and dressers as tidy as possible. Frequent cleaning of usual undisturbed areas reduces the likelihood of a nest going undetected.

Physical Controls

Once bed bugs are found, it’s now time to remove them from your home. Begin by putting some water into the bottom of your wet dry vacuum. Not much, about an inch or two is all that is needed. As the bed bugs are scurrying, suck them up. Once you have finished removing the bed bugs you have found, shut off the vacuum and shake the vac for about 30 seconds to ensure all of the bed bugs are submerged.

If a lot of debris had been picked up while using this method, the bedbugs will walk on top of this debris and avoid the water altogether. The shaking ensures that they have made it below the water line. Once you have finished, pour the water down the toilet and flush. Be sure to remove both the mattress and box spring so you can vacuum all sides of each including the bed frame, headboard, and surrounding areas.

Extermination

Pest Control products are sometimes needed. If even after all the above steps have been done yet the bed bugs are still present, then natural insecticides might be required. Make sure to use a natural spray that is labeled for bed bugs and the area you are spraying.  In general, treating the cracks and crevices is much more effective than spraying the mattress anyway since the tight spaces are where bed bugs actually live. The last thing you want to do is to sleep on bugs sprays.
