Well, we’re finally moving into fall. That means just around the corner is winter, and with winter comes a special kind of pest. Termites, and not just any termites. Today we’re going to be discussing the Florida termite swarmers, and what it means if you see them.
Florida Termite Swarmers: Overview
More than anything termite swarmers are a herald of a bigger problem. At certain times of the year, termite colonies produce what’s called the “swarmers”. These are the winged adults that fly away from their colonies. This usually happens during the daytime and is a stark reminder that termites are nearby. But, the swarmers themselves aren’t usually the biggest issue.
The Florida termite swarmers probably came from a nearby underground nest. If you find most of them outdoor, then the nest is probably somewhere in your yard. Likely either under an old tree stump or in any other old, rotting wood. If you find them indoors, though, then you likely have an infestation in your home or business. As for the swarmers themselves, they usually die if they cannot escape from your home.
You’ll find their bodies on the window sills or open areas. If you can, collect a few of the bodies for when you contact a pest control specialist, which is honestly the first thing you should do. Many ants produce winged adults, so getting the type of infestation identified is a very important step to take.
What To Do?
Like with most infestations, there’s not much you can do once it’s already established. The best thing for you is to contact a pest control specialist. Specifically, one that uses natural methods, as pesticides have long been proven to cause anything from rashes to cancer. It’s much better to be safe and have the problem solved anyway than sorry.
