Florida really is a beautiful state. Our shared home isn’t called the Sunshine State for anything. Blue skies, beautiful beaches, ancient swamps, and culture as old as the country itself. But living in such a warm, wet, and tropical climate comes with its own drawbacks. Bugs in Florida are a part of life. And we often find ourselves sharing our spaces with creatures that, let’s be honest, we would rather not. But half the battle on keeping these things out of our homes is staying informed. That’s why today we’re going to cover three common palm harbor pests.
Three Common Palm Harbor Pests: The Roach
Few things on this planet can cause such a visceral reaction in almost everyone as the roach. Cockroach infestations are a very common problem in our beautiful state as well. And this goes for both home and business owners. And the biggest issue with this critter is just how prolific and tough it is.
Roaches are easily transported bugs that can simply hide away in items that you bring into your houses during a move. Outside of that, they can simply squeeze under doorframes or make their way in through your piping system underground. Improperly sealed windows are also a common gateway for these little things.
And while they may not bite like some other pests, they are a health hazard. They carry germs, defecate frequently, and breed very, very quickly. The old saying is that if you see one roach, there’s twelve you don’t…
Three Common Palm Harbor Pests: Mosquitos
If you have this problem, you are far from alone. Almost every household in Florida can claim to the unproud title of mosquito infested. We’re in the perfect, swampy environment for one of the deadliest bugs on the planet. Nothing kills more human beings than the “humble” mosquito.
And thanks to Florida being a popular hub for trading ships moving from other countries, we even have invasive species from down south. Both South America and Africa have decided to share their versions of this pest with us, which means we have a lot more than malaria to worry about. West Nile, Zika, and all sorts of maladies are carried in these blood sucker’s bodies.
Three Common Palm Harbor Pests: Fire Ants
You may look at this one and think, “Ants? That’s not so bad!” And if they weren’t fire ants, I’d agree with you. But not only do fire ants have stingers, massive colonies, and a very, very nasty temper. But they also are an invasive species and have no checks or balances that come from our Florida home.
These guys can infest either your yards or your walls. They have colonies millions strong, and if they have access to a child or a small pet, they can be more than fatal. Control isn’t just as simple as drowning them or digging them up either, due to the size of their homes. In fact, all three of these are going to require a Palm Harbor pest control specialist if you have a TRUE infestation knocking at your door.
