How to Get Rid of Cockroaches Naturally

So, natural pest control is in my blood. I have been a student and practitioner of natural pest control for more than thirty years. Today, I share with you some of my tips and tricks on How to get rid of Cockroaches Naturally.

How to Get Rid of Cockroaches Naturally -Exclusions

Roaches love to enter our home in several ways. From the grocery store tucked away in boxes and even the bags and boxes we use to transport our food home. They love to come into our homes from used items such as electronics and furniture. And lastly, cockroaches love to enter from the outside (depending on the species). To ensure roaches are not being brought home from the grocery store it is imperative to inspect these items for bugs before bringing them inside. Look for roach body parts or even their fecal what resembles pepper flakes, for German Roaches, which will be stuck on or inside the items you intend to bring home.

Next, you want to seal holes entering your home. Replace any weather stripping that needs repair. How do you know if the weather-stripping needs replacing? During the day, if you can see daylight coming through the stripping, it is not sealed well enough to prevent cockroaches. Now, seal around all pipes and wires entering the structure with caulking or expandable foam. Now is a good time to remove firewood and other stored items that allow roaches to nest outside of your home. You want to minimize any nesting areas so there is less of a chance of cockroaches trying to invade your space.

This step requires you to seal any holes and voids inside. One of the easiest places for roaches to enter is around the pipes of sinks and bathtubs. Seal these spaces to discourage these nasty critters from entering your home.

How to Get Rid of Cockroaches Naturally – Sanitation

Cockroaches love areas undisturbed and even dirty. If you have an area that has been left untouched for a while, it’s time to clean out that area. By doing so, you may find the cause of the roach infestation. Next, be sure to clean stove, oven and the spaces next to and behind the stove. This is a huge nesting area for cockroaches because of the obvious, we cook there, and debris naturally falls. This debris helps roaches thrive.

Here is the next area that is often overlooked, the refrigerator. This appliance has everything roaches need for survival, food, water, and shelter. Be sure to clean behind and under as often as possible. Let’s not forget dirty dishes. Roaches are nocturnal, in most cases. So each night, be sure to have all of your dishes and counters cleaned off before bed. This will remove any food sources the roaches may be looking for at night.

How to Get Rid of Cockroaches Naturally – Physical Controls

If while working on the sanitation portion of How to get rid of Cockroaches Naturally a nest of roaches is found this is the step for you. This methodology utilizes a wet-dry shop vacuum for insect control. Cockroaches do poorly when they are submerged in water so that fact makes the wet-dry vacuum a handy tool in controlling a cockroach infestation.

Begin by putting some water into the bottom of your wet dry vacuum. Not much, about an inch or two is all that is needed. As the roaches are scurrying, suck them up. Once you have finished removing the cockroaches you have found, shut off the vacuum and shake the vac for about 30 seconds to ensure all of the roaches have been submerged. If a lot of debris had been picked up while using this method, the insects will walk on top of this debris and avoid the water altogether. The shaking ensures that the cockroaches have made it below the water line. Once you have finished, pour the water down the toilet and flush.

Extermination

Pest Control products are sometimes needed. If even after all the above steps are completed the roaches are still present, natural insecticides might be required. In this case, start with boric acid or diatomaceous earth dust. These products are used in the cracks and crevices, where roaches hide. Most boric acids have an anti-caking agent in them where diatomaceous earth generally does not. This anti-caking agent allows the boric acid to continue working in high humidity areas such as Florida. Be sure to read the label and follow the directions.

Next, cockroach baits are designed to feed the cockroaches to remove them from your home. Baits allow a small about of product to be placed in areas such as under the sink and where ever else cockroaches live. Like with the products above, always read the label and follow the directions. Boric acid baits are also recommended.

If absolutely necessary, a natural spray can be used outside. These sprays can contain items such as orange oil, rosemary, and more. Then these products can be sprayed around windows, doors, pipe openings, etc. Make sure to follow the directions of the natural pesticide you purchased. And also as important, check to make sure the product will not stain the exterior of your home. To do this, spray on an inconspicuous area or even on leftover stones, etc. you might have. If it stains, be sure to find another product.

In Conclusion

Well, this concludes the article on How to get rid of Cockroaches Naturally. Follow these steps for control and prevention of cockroaches. By focusing on sanitation and exclusion, you will be able to help prevent future infestations without having to use any pesticides in the first place.
