Bed Bugs and the Elderly

Bed Bugs and the Elderly

Bed bugs are all around us, and we are entirely unaware.  They live everywhere humans spend time, not just in our beds. Sadly, these blood-sucking creatures can be in hotels, buses, schools, concert venues. Additionally, they are found in sports arenas, restaurants, and many other places as well. Most of us can quickly detect when there is an infestation that makes it to our home. However, many of the elderly are infested with bedbugs and are completely oblivious of that fact.

Be mindful that your grandparents, mother, father, aunt, uncle or even your elderly neighbor may be bedridden and have no way of dealing with the bed bugs. This is true even if they know that a problem exists. As a result, these older people might be the food for the blood-sucking creatures without having the ability to stop the problem.

Our older generation needs our assistance in this matter.  First, let’s start by visiting our loved ones to see how things are going. Then, check their bed, couches, and chairs for any bed bugs. Remove the sheets, the mattress, and box spring to make sure nothing is nesting. Before putting the bed back together, install mattress and box spring encasements whether bugs were seen or not. Do not skimp on price with the bed bug covers. These encasements should have a zipper that will be covered by a flap. The flap helps to prevent the bugs from entering or escaping. If you go cheap on price, the covers will tear. The key is for these covers to last for a long time to help prevent an infestation.

Live Bed Bugs Found

Now, if you find live bed bugs, it’s time to hire a professional pest control company to solve the infestation. Treatment is not cheap. However, when you hire a firm to provide the eradication service, they are more equipped to be successful with the control.  Now is not the time to try to save a buck; especially when our elders are the food for these pests.

Let’s keep an eye on our older generation and do what we can to ensure that they are not falling prey to those blood-sucking bugs.
