Growing up in central Florida, Polk City was always a tiny town to me. These days, instead of tiny, it’s just small. But that’s not gonna last for too much longer, I think. Being right off of I-4, we see developers building new homes and warehouses in Polk City every few months. And when you have an explosion of people, there’s a good chance you’ll have an explosion of pest control issues as well. That’s why today we’re going to cover some common Polk City pests, and who to call when you need a Polk City exterminator.

Polk City exterminator: Are pests bad in Polk City Florida?

Polk City is a piece of land that’s halfway in the past and halfway in the future of Florida. And by that, I mean that it doesn’t take long driving through the city to go from woods to housing developments, to congested intersections, back to the woods. When you have ecosystems being disrupted like that, you’re going to have pest issues.

For one, the native pests of the region will start moving into homes because of the simple fact that they have nowhere else to go. When you mow a forest flat and build a neighborhood on top of it, all of the bugs that were living in and around the area don’t just vanish. But thanks to the diminished amount of food and shelter available to them, you may need help from a Polk City exterminator when they start moving their way inside to make up for all that lost space.

And then, on top of that, people moving in means invasive pests, too. German cockroaches and bedbugs aren’t native to Florida. But that doesn’t mean that these two pests aren’t some of the worst pest control issues in Florida these days. I mean, when restaurants open, people move down, and garbage dumps have to be made, it’s pretty easy to see how such things can happen.

And on top of that, there’s the shipping. Florida isn’t just a tourism state. It has plenty of ports for ships coming into the country and leaving. That’s how the invasive fire ants made their way to the state, in fact. Speaking of which, now let’s touch on another topic.

Common Polk City Florida pests

When it comes to homes and businesses, there are a few pest families and various species within that you can expect to find in Polk City. Let’s touch on a few of those before we talk about who to go to for Polk City exterminator needs.

Cockroaches

In Florida, we have over eighty species of cockroach. Thankfully, there’s only a handful you can expect to see invade your home. Not thankfully, some of them are the worst species of roach to deal with on the planet. For one, you have the American Cockroach. Often mistakenly called the palmetto bug, this is the largest species of cockroach in North America. You can identify them by their large size, often reaching three inches in length and the half circle of yellow that runs along their shells behind their heads. These roaches can also fly, though not well. So leaving a kitchen window open at night with the lights on can easily lead to one flying straight in and, accidentally, into the side of your head.

The other species you’re likely to find infesting Polk City homes is the German Cockroach. These roaches are the most common home infesting species on the planet. And the reason for that likely has to do with the female’s biology. Once they mate, a female German cockroach doesn’t have to mate again for the rest of its life. They retain the semen of the first male and can use it periodically to have up to three hundred thousand live young. So a single roach, God forbid a handful, can lead to a massive infestation if you’re not careful.

Termites

Florida, of all the states, has the absolute worst termite problems. Every year, billions of dollars of termite damage is inflicted. The environment, amount of people, and old structures all create perfect habitats for this wood eating pest. And when you’re talking old farmland with plenty of rotted out, abandoned barns, you know you’re talking about Polk City. Every spring, flying swarmers cover central Florida to find new places to eat.

Subterranean Termites are the worst of all termite types and are found in massive numbers in Florida. They live and invade from underground, living in a single colony that can cover an acre of property underneath the surface. They’re usually found in wall voids and attic structures and warrant an immediate call to a Polk City exterminator if you find them.

Mosquitoes

I don’t believe I need much of an intro for this last pest group. Whether you’re a new or old resident, you know Florida’s mosquito problems are bad. And that’s just because of the environment. You can link Florida’s mosquitoes to shipping much like you can fire ants.

Invasive species flock to the state by the thousands aboard freighter ships. Now, Florida is home to mosquito species that carry bloodborne diseases from every continent. Florida mosquitoes carry malaria, Dengue Fever, Yellow River Fever, Zika Virus, and many other foreign and domestic viruses and diseases. If you’re interested,

What to do if you need a Polk City Exterminator

The issue with a pest control problem is manifold. There’s never just one problem. And if you try to deal with it yourself, you’re going to make things worse, more than likely. For example, improper use of chemical pesticides can lead to fast-reproducing bugs mutating resistances to the improper dosages, which leads them to become resistant to all dosages.
