Spring Hill Florida is a pretty sweet place to kick your feet up. The rapid development swallowing Florida isn’t moving quite as quickly there. But with a population reaching over a hundred thousand, the city is still growing. And growing cities have their problems, especially in the south. That’s why today we’re going to touch on some things that may have you running for the Spring Hill Florida Exterminator as quickly as you can.
Spring Hill Florida Exterminator: Why is pest control so important in Florida?
Down here in the Sunshine State we’re pretty inundated with bugs. And while I’m sure most people know at least a few reasons why, let’s touch on the aggregate here. The number one reason, of course, comes down to Florida’s ecosystem. Low lying beaches slowly incline through various bug loving ecosystems before settling into forests and swamps that pump out bugs by the millions. Basically, as long as nature is even a little bit intact in Florida, you’re going to be dealing with bugs.
Then you have the invasive issues. Where people travel, bugs travel. Be it something like a bed bug hitching a ride across states in someone’s suitcase, only to land in a holiday inn that’s next to an apartment complex to turn into a full on infestation. Then you have the shipping from corporate interests all over the world that bring ants, mosquitoes, cockroaches, and all other tropical invasive insects. Human activity always changes things, and bug populations are one of the quickest to balloon out of control.
And any time a new industry starts, you have a bug population that’s going to be displaced and looking for a new home. Spring Hill Florida may not be growing as fast as Tampa or Brandon, but it’s on the rise, and every new development is going to have bugs looking for where their homes used to be and finding yours instead.
What are some of the worst Florida pest insects?
Now let’s touch on some of the bugs you can find that will have you needing the service of a Spring Hill Florida exterminator. Ants are a problem anywhere, but the southeast has a real problem with our first bug on the list.
Red Imported Fire ant
One of the worst pests in the entire Southeastern United States is the fire ant. But most people don’t know they’re not actually from here. The full name of this pest is actually the Red Imported Fire Ant. They come from South America and probably made their way here on a shipping freighter sometime in the 1960s. Since then, they’ve become the dominant species of ant in the Southeast. They have no natural predators here, and none of the domestic ants can stand a chance against them.
Fire ants build massive, sprawling colonies. They have entrances and exits known as mounds or hills. Mounds are piles of dirt on the ground that can be three feet from end to end with holes for the ants to crawl in or out of. If they build their nest somewhere there’s some support, like an old fence post, the hills they create can be two feet straight up into the air. Underground, their colonies number in the hundreds of thousands and can stretch longer than ninety feet from end to end. In residential neighborhoods, it’s not uncommon for Spring Hill Florida, exterminator crews to find multiple homes side by side infested by the same colony.
And you can’t talk about fire ants without talking about their namesake. And while these ants are red like fire, they actually get their name from their sting. Red imported fire ants have a mild alkaline toxin that they inject through a stinger on their thorax. And when one bites you, they’ll sting in circles until knocked off or killed. And the sting burns like fire, swells up with pus, and itches for a solid week before it heals.
Cockroaches
Another uniquely southern problem is cockroaches. Not the fact that they exist down here. Everywhere in the world has to deal with them. However, in Florida, cockroaches keep the Spring Hill Florida exterminator more than busy. These guys are everywhere, and Florida has dozens of species that both live indoors and outdoors.
In Florida, there are two species you’re more likely to find indoors than others. The first is the American Cockroach. These guys are huge around central and southern Florida. And when I say huge, I mean both physically and the sheer number of them in the state. These roaches are the largest in the continental U.S., regularly reaching over three inches in length. Between that and the distinct yellow band that runs along the back of its head in a half circle, these guys are pretty easy to identify.
The other species you’re liable to run into is, unfortunately a much bigger issue. Known as the German cockroach, this species is one of the worst home infesters that you’ll find among roaches- and you can thank their breeding habits for that. One female can have hundreds of thousands of offspring in her lifetime, so a handful of roaches becomes a problem very fast with this species.
And they’re not just a Florida problem. German cockroaches have spread worldwide and can settle anywhere. So, if you see them, you likely need professional help to remove them. They breed too fast and are too resourceful for simple cleanliness to fix the problem.
