Formosan Termites

Formosan Termites are subterranean termites which feed on cellulose. This termite is considered the most aggressive termite with much larger colonies. Consequently, they attack larger varieties of wood while causing severe damage.  The damage they cause can be far worse than other species of subterranean termites

This social insect will, at times, construct above ground nests. Unlike other types of subterranean termites, Formosan Termites do not need constant contact with the ground.

Termite Damage

You cannot always tell that these, or any subterranean termites are infesting the wood of your structure. Frequently, they will leave the paint alone as they feed leaving themselves almost undetectable. When they enter from outside, they will do so in a way such as between 2 pieces of wood. This allows them to enter freely. These methodologies allow the Formosan Termite to do lots of damage before anyone knows there is an infestation.

Identify Formosan Termites

These social insects have three castes within their colony. The soldiers, the workers, and lastly the reproductive (swarmer). The reproductive caste can be either winged or wingless.

Soldier Termites have more of teardrop style heads compared to other subterranean termites. As a defense, these aggressive soldiers excrete a white secretion from its fontanel gland. They will also attack with their strong mandibles.

Worker Termites are a whitish color. It is difficult to identify the Formosan Termite by the worker caste because they do resemble other species of subterranean termites

Termite Swarm (Reproductive) Formosan Termites take their nuptial flight generally late May to Early June, at night. Since they are attracted to lights, you may see them and or their wings on your windowsills.

Signs of Formosan Termite Infestation

Just like other types of subterranean termites, the Formosan creates mud tubes. At times, these shelter tubes will avail themselves. You may also see blistering paint, damaged wood, and or wings and bodies

While not every subterranean termite infestation is an infestation of Formosan Termites, it is best to hire a local pest control company to find out for sure. A termite company will properly inspect for these and other termite infestations. Then, they will suggest the best methodology for control. While an exterminator is not always needed to control pests or bugs, termites are an exception to this rule
